Shri Guru Nanak Dev ji was the founder of the sikh religion, who set up a unique spiritual, social and political platform based on equality, fraternal love, goodness and virtue. The parkash diwas or birthday gurpurab of Shri Guru Nanak Dev ji is celebrated on the puranmashi of Kattak month. In the year 2023, the date of Guru Nanak Dev ji Gurpurab is Friday, November 15, 2024 and we are going to celebrate 554th birth anniversary of Guru ji.
Shri Guru Nanak Dev ji was born in the year 1469 at Rai Bhoi di Talwandi (now Nankana Sahib in Pakistan) and Gurdwara Janam Asthan is situated at this place . On the occasion of birthday Gurpurab of Guru Nanak Dev ji, there is a festival Holiday a public holiday in Nankana Sahib.
This Gurpurab is celebrated with much enthusiasm and religious fervour at Gurdwara Janam Asthan, Nankana Sahib, Pakistan . Sikh sangat from across the world come to Nankana Sahib Pakistan to take part in the gurpurab celebrations with respect and devotion. Devotees take a dip in the holy sarovar (pool) located inside the premises of Gurdwara Janam Asthan, offer prayers and seek blessings of Guru ji on the occasion of birthday Gurpurab of Guru Nanak Dev ji.
This Gurpurab is observed in the peak summer season and sikhs organize ‘Chabeel’ (free service of cold & sweetened water) at many places in the memory of guru ji.
Guru Nanak was born in Nankana Sahib, in Punjab. This is now part of Pakistan.
When Guru Nanak was a child he refused the upanayana (holy thread) to initiate him into the Hindu religion. Later in his life he married Mata Sulakhani with whom he had two sons. They were called Sri Chand and Lakshmi Das. According to the Sikh religion, one day he was bathing in the river and god took him up to heaven. His family members were very worried as they had thought he died. After three days he returned with the message of god. He gave up his job to spread the message on how to be a good person.
He died in Kartarpur.
